What is Scrubs Camp?

Scrubs Camps are day-long events where students will hear from a variety of healthcare professionals who will discuss what they do and how they got into their professions. Students will also have a chance to experience these professions through many fun, interactive activities throughout the day. They will learn about the educational requirements for each profession and hear about what they should do throughout their high school years to help plan for a career in the healthcare industry.

What will the day be like?

Each camp varies slightly, however, the general format is the same from camp to camp. Upon arriving at the camp, students will register and receive camp materials. Throughout the day, they will go to several sessions and hear from approximately 5-10 healthcare speakers, perform many hands-on healthcare career-related activities and learn more about educational opportunities in South Dakota. Does it cost to attend a camp?

There is no charge to attend any of the Scrubs Camps held throughout the state.

How many camps can my child attend?

In order to ensure that all students who wish to attend a camp get this opportunity, we ask that students limit their camp selections to two.

May I attend the camp with my child?

Yes. There is a space on the registration form to indicate you would like to attend with your child.

Does my child have to attend the camp in our town/area?

Students may attend whichever camp(s) is most convenient for you/them.

My child thinks they want to work in the healthcare industry, but they're still not sure. Should they still go to a camp?

Yes. Scrubs Camps are a good opportunity to explore many health careers. Students may find the exact career they want to pursue or they may completely change your mind and become interested in a different career.

What do we need from you as a speaker?

Plan to devote one-fourth of your total session time to discussing your career specifically. The remaining time should be devoted to a hands-on activity that is pertinent to your occupation. For ideas and examples of hands-on activities, contact the Yankton Rural Area Health Education Center (YRAHEC) at 605.655.1400.

What should I talk about?

What is your job/formal job title/where do you work? What made you choose your career? Where did you go to school/train and how much schooling was required? What do you do/what is a typical day like for you? What do you like best about your job? What classes should students take in high school and in postsecondary programs? What type of volunteer experience(s) did you engage in? What type of part-time job(s) did you have? What is your work environment: alone/group, office/open area, sitting/on feet, etc.?
